This spring, the Andrew W. Mellon funded Humanities for the Public Good initiative will host a series of conversations to share what we’re learning about graduate education in the humanities. The first conversation features University of Iowa faculty who have redesigned “Introduction to Graduate Studies” courses in key departments, including those who received HPG Course Mini-grants.
For the last two years, a series of energetic Advisory Board members have used this grant to develop plans for a cross-disciplinary, experiential graduate degree in the humanities. Our goal has been to prepare students for a range of careers where humanistic methods and mindsets and a commitment to social justice would position them for success. Future conversations will explore the humanities lab as a model for connecting the disciplinary knowledge of the humanities with pressing social problems and the emergence of new forms of the “dissertation.”
