Internship: Iowa Labor History Oral Project
The Iowa Labor History Oral Project (ILHOP) is an over forty-year-old oral history project managed by the UI Labor Center in collaboration with partners at the UI Libraries, State Historical Society of Iowa, Iowa Labor History Society, and the Iowa Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO. We seek an intern to assist with one of two ongoing initiatives; the selected applicant’s skills and interests will determine their focus. The first initiative is Solidarity and Survival, a website hosted by the UI Libraries that is designed to bring the stories of Iowa workers to teachers and students, with an emphasis on high school and college classrooms. The second is Speaking of Work, a podcast that uses audio documentary to bring stories from ILHOP to a wide audience of listeners.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist in recording and editing of oral histories
- Create curricular materials and prepare for public
- Provide research and informed input on the development of either or both projects
- Maintain information on website
Qualifications & Skills Preferred:
- Experience with audio editing
- Familiarity with curriculum design
- Interest in Iowa history, labor and working-class history, oral history, public history, digital history, and/or library and information studies
- Strong editing and communication skills
- Experience with or willingness to learn web site design principles
- Ability to develop materials appropriate for public audiences
